There is no faster way to learn to play the guitar then to get in a band and start hearing the music around you and finding a place for your own guitar sound to fit in while the other band members play.

So many guitarists try to learn to play guitar with their eyes when in truth it is their EARS that matter most. If you haven't learned any chords to play yet, or only know a few - take a moment to read this lesson (and any of the linked lessons) to get started with some basic chord progressions. You'll know enough to play in a band in no time.

Mastering Riffs - Simple Beginner Chords and Progressions That'll Get You in a Band Quickly
By Barry Livingstone

Mastering riffs is the fastest way for beginner guitarists to get themselves into a band and having fun. Any seasoned guitarist will tell you to learn the basic major, minor, 5th (really an interval... not a chord), and seventh chords... then quickly learn the basic patterns (called progressions) which these chords are played. The basic progressions using these fundamental guitar chords are the underlying tunes to so many songs you hear on the radio that mastering riffs of just a few songs will keep you busy for years learning all the other songs that use the same patterns.

For example, the most basic of all progressions most guitarists learn is called the I-IV-V chord progression. In the simplest of terms, this pattern calls for the guitarist to play the 1st (major) - 4th (Major) - then 5th (Major) chord of any given major scale. Forget for a moment the terms and think about in terms of strings you can play at the open end of the fret board. Place your fingers in position for an A Major chord (presuming you're playing right handed guitar your left ring finger is holding the 3rd, 4th, and 5th strings down at the 2nd fret). Strum the guitar strings from 2nd string to the bottom. That is an A Major chord (the I in the I-IV-V progression). Now slide your whole hand up the fretboard (towards the body of the guitar) while keeping your ring finger flat in the same relative position. Anchor your ring finger across just behind the seventh fret. Keep your ring finger flat as before and lay your index finger flat across strings two thru five just behind the 5th fret. Strum the same five strings as before. That is a D Major chord (the IV in the I-IV-V).

Move your entire left hand two frets up (toward the body again), again keeping your ring and index fingers in the same relative positions (ring should now be behind the 9th fret, covering 3rd, 4th, and 5th strings, index finger is now behind the 7th fret). This is an E Major chord (the V in the I-IV-V chord progression). Play these three simple chords in succession. Repeat this a few times until it is easy to go from one position on the fretboard to the next. Get to the point where you can play the three positions without thinking about it and you've got it nailed. Mastering riffs is as simple as that, but there is more here than meets the eye here. Mastering riffs also involves experimentation and variation on the same themes. Using the same finger positions you just learned, try the simple chord progression (V-I-IV-I). This pattern should sound incredibly familiar to your ears, and you should be able to name 2 dozen songs that have a similar feel to them.

Mastering riffs takes time and practice, but should be very easy for even the most novice guitarist (so long as you build your hand strength a little). Mastering riffs like the I-IV-V will quickly get you accomplished enough to play for friends and perhaps join a band (I hope you do). I hope you enjoyed this simple guitar lesson.

Mastering riffs is one of the basic lessons offered online for you to experience online. Click here to learn about all the free guitar lessons online for beginning guitarists. Why do you want to learn to play the guitar? Do you want to play in a band? Do you want to live the party lifestyle? Do you want to make money as a musician? What makes you pick up a guitar and start playing?

I can't speak to your reasons for wanting to pick up a guitar, but here are some thoughts of a friend of mine about staying motivated yet continuing to progress as a musician.
How to Learn and Master the Guitar
By Barry Livingstone

If you're looking for how to learn and master the guitar I think I can help you. Mastering guitar play obviously takes hours of practice but how and what you practice are by far more important than how long you practice. You need to learn to be both efficient in your practice time and you also need to know how to keep your practice time fun so you stick with it.

So why do you want to know how to learn and master the guitar in the first place? Is it because you've started a band and want to start playing out? Is it because you're already playing out and have found yourself in a rut? Heaven forbid... did the unthinkable happen and your band broke up or worse? Hey, get used to it, it happens. The good news is that whatever your reason for wanting to know how to learn and master the guitar you're going to find plenty of help on the web.

What's even better is that lessons circa 2009 are a millennia ahead of the lessons I had when I started playing twenty plus years ago. If I'd had the lessons then that I have access to today you'd be playing MY tunes on guitar hero lol. Enough about me though, if you're going to learn how to learn and master the guitar I think you'll need keep two jars full to get both the knowledge you need and enjoy practicing enough that you'll stick with it.

The first jar you need to keep filled is your spirit. You need to have fun playing and stay motivated by enjoying learning how to learn and master the guitar. If you're not having fun your guitar is going to sit on the stand (or worse) back in the case longing for your fingers to stroke it. Not a good thing if your learning how to learn and master the guitar.

The second jar your need to keep filled is your technique. Sloppy play is sloppy play. Guessing and ad-libbing through solos and fills really isn't mastery, is it? Whether you've been playing for years or months it is never too late to how to learn and master the guitar techniques and theories which have been played for centuries.

To that end I've scoured the web and brought together what I think are the two best learning tools you'll find when it comes to how to learn and master the guitar. You can find both learning tools at the website in my signature line.

The first tool is about technique. It's a series of comprehensive lessons available on DVD which teach not only proper technique, but the in depth theory of how to build and master your own playing style and sound. There is also an entire lesson about music theory, how the scales and chords are built and sound together. This is where you learn the mastery of the craft. Don't let the name of the company (Metal Method) put you off if you're into learning acoustic guitar or want to play country styles.

Metal Method teaches comprehensive technique and theory necessary to master ANY style. Whether you're a beginner or advanced player, you won't become a master until you've mastered the contents of the fundamentals contained on the complete basic course. Advanced specialized courses are also available but this article focuses on the broad techniques course set (about $70 if memory serves for the 6 DVD set).

The other set of tools I think you should have is a set of your favorite songs in tablature form. Learning your favorite songs breaks up the monotony of practicing and keeps providing you with fresh material to try your new techniques on. To that end there is another really terrific company (Musicnotes) which has built an amazing software program called Guitar Guru.

When you use the Guru software, you download a session of your favorite song. The Guru software then displays the tablature right on your screen and plays the notes along with you through the sound on your computer. It's simply amazing. The Guru software is free and the sessions cost between $7 and $10. Well worth it. Imagine downloading your favorite tunes and having an instructor right in front of you exactly at the moment you're motivated to learn the song. It's truly amazing.

Personally I'm having a blast playing Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes and Van Halen licks with the help of the on-screen guitar tab and music tones. I hope this has helped you think about how to learn and master the guitar. Maybe someday I'll be playing your solo on guitar hero! Let's see if we can lift some of the fog on the basic guitar note charts you are likely to see.

A typical chord pattern you are likely to see involves laying a finger flat across strings 2 through six, while laying another finger flat across strings 3 through 5 two frets higher up the fretboard. In this case you're going to use the index finger for the first set (strings 2-5), and your ring finger for the notes on strings 3 through 6. Simple enough? Let's try a harder one.

A similar pattern you'll see in guitar note charts is the same flat finger across strings 2 through five, but now they want you to hold down string 5 one fret above the flat finger, while holding string 3 and 4 two frets higher. Which fingers go where?

The answer is typically most players use the index finger for the flat position (the barre - in a barre chord), while they then use the middle finger to cover the 5th string, and the ring covers the 3rd. That leaves the pinky to cover the 4th. It is not advisable to try to bridge the 3rd and 4th with the ring finger - as it is very difficult to keep the notes clean and move quickly to the next chord position.

See more fingerings for basic and advanced scales at our guitar note charts lesson, the third in the five part free online lead guitar lessons series offered online for you to see and preview. Beginner guitarists are always straining their eyes to see the tablature notes on the page or on the screen (digital guitar tabs are very handy by the way).

I've always felt the best way for beginning guitarists to learn the theory of guitar is by teaching them along the way to intuitively hear the underlying theory without encumbering them with names and numbers to confuse them. I don't know how many times I've said to them... "it sounds like this" with my back turned to them so they can't see my fretboard. It frustrates them because they start out learning slower, but believe me they always leap ahead of the other teacher's students as a result.

Theory of Guitar - How I Teach it and How I Learned It
By Frank A Smith

My philosophy is to teach theory of guitar as an underlying theme when I'm writing lessons for students in my classes. Typically what I like to do is have an overall theme in mind, where I'm planning to teach a song or a part of a song but as we go through the lesson I have encourage the students to tease the theory of guitar out of the music.

This strategy has proved to work remarkably well as I find not only am I teaching the students about what I see in the underlying theory of guitar in the music, but I find they are teaching me as well - taking the lessons in new and wonderfully unpredictable directions. Someone long ago once told me the best way to learn is to teach... but I guess I had never really experienced it until recently.

A sample lesson I had put together was basically designed just to introduce a couple of chords and a really simple chord progression but before I knew it I had half the class playing the riff and the other half taking turns creating new lead solos over the riff using a pentatonic minor scale we had learned only a week prior. Getting the students to solo over the riff was an expected outcome of the two week learning plan. Where the lesson took an unusual turn was when one of the students started playing something totally unexpected.

My student began soloing in a totally different key, and it sounded really different, but in a good way. We took a moment to analyze the theory of guitar underlying what made the change in key still sound ok over our basic riff.

This little theory of guitar lesson in my class became the foundation of an entire new series of lessons. I found a similar lesson series on a DVD set which I previewed online. Now I use it as the foundation for all my teaching courses, with the theory of guitar always just under the surface for students to discover and explore. Click here and sign up for all the free video guitar lessons online.

Playing guitar is a lot of fun and creates valuable friendships. at one point or another and wondered why guitar gods make it look so easy. They short answer is that it's not easy, and that super-star guitarists have spent years mastering their craft. That doesn't mean you necessarily have to study like the masters to become modestly proficient at guitar. On the other hand, if you do a little studying of the right material the right way you can make tremendous leaps in a short time.
The A minor pentatonic scale guitar note chart
The 'V' in the chart denotes the fifth fret. The lower case letters indicate the fingers you should most likely use to play the notes - i for index, m for middle, r for ring, and p for pinky. We good so far? Kewl. This five tone scale has the notes A C D E and G, and can be played over a wide variety of chord progressions such as the I-IV-V (would be A-D-E in this case) or any of a number of other chord progressions from an A minor scale. As with any other online lead guitar lessons I've written, I always expect you to record chord progressions and practice playing leads over them. In this case you'd want to be recording the simple A-D-E chord progression, and then practicing running up and down the scale chart (with the chords playing in the background) and listening for where the solo changes should be and what sounds good. Developing your ear is the most critical element of becoming an intuitive guitar player. Starting with simple progressions and leads from a guitar note chart like the A minor pentatonic will develop your rote knowledge while you are focusing on the more important task of developing your ear for music.

Electric Guitar Chords - Simple, Versatile, and a Great Place to Start

When someone talks about electric guitar chords, they're usually talking about barre chords because they're easier to play on an electric guitar than an acoustic. Most songs written for acoustic that might prompt someone to play barre chords usually end up investing in a capo instead.

A Capo

With that said we'll try to talk a little bit about a couple of electric guitar chords that you'll find easy to play and get you started in the right direction to becoming a proficient rhythm guitarist, and ultimately hopefully your learn to play lead guitar as well.

Let's learn the basic fingering of a major chord on the 2nd string. This finger position requires a little bit of hand strength but with practice you'll get it. Place your index finger flat across the fretboard just behind the fifth fret, covering the 2nd, through 6th strings. Now with put your ring finger flat across the 3rd thru 5th strings just behind the seventh fret.

Basic chords like this D major do take time to learn to play with ease, but you'll find that once you have this chord and a few others under your belt you'll quickly hear familiar combinations of chords in your own play. Developing your ear will need to be an important part of your lead guitar lesson plan. Get used to sliding your hand up and down the neck while holding this finger position together. This will help you get the hand strength needed to play chords quickly and cleanly (sign up for free video demos of this here)

Metal Guitar Scale for Dark and Heavy Playing

Many times when playing heavy I play a metal guitar scale which calls for many flat notes relative to the major scale. One scale I like to use in particular flats the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 7ths relative to the major. This leaves the root chord in minor, likewise the 2nd, 5th and 7th chords relative to the scale. The 6th chord is diminished.

This obviously has the impact of moving around the tones of the chords quite a bit resulting in a very different, much darker sound when playing traditional progressions which would normally sound bright. I like to use the example of the simple I-IV-V in the major scale (all major chords) which sounds quite dreary in this minor scale (i-IV-v - the first and fifth chords are minor), using this example really demonstrates the differences between the two - and sets the stage for more advanced study. Hearing the difference when playing scales and leads over your own progressions is the best way to advance your music knowledge and develop your own unique playing style, whether you ultimately decide to use a metal guitar scale or not.

Lead Guitar Notes to Change Moods

Learning to play exploratory lead guitar involves knowing which lead guitar notes will take your audience in a new direction. Ever notice in your favorite songs how the melody is going along in one direction then the mood suddenly changes with just a few notes played as the lead solo opens up?

It's not magic how that happens. Careful study of and experimentation with scales and key changes is how the guitar masters learned how to bridge sections of songs together. This allowed guitar greats like Eddie Van Halen (think of the guitar solo in Michael Jackson's "Beat It" for a great change of direction) to seemlessly yet dramatically help us jump from bridge to lead back to chorus in that song.

Learning lead guitar notes is not just a study in memorizing tablature in magazines or books, but of getting intimately familiar with the underlying scales and keys. It is also not a case of learning the note names. What playing great lead takes is bridging the gap between the letters and numbers on the paper and how they sound when played over different chord progressions. My recommendation is record yourself playing your favorite chord riffs, then get really familiar with scales which will fit those chords. Throw in a few melodic licks and experiment over and over until you play more by ear and feel and less by memorization. You can find great individual chord progressions and licks lessons here.

It takes time, but your own direction and lead guitar notes will come.

Online Lead Guitar Series - Get Ready to Shred

I created the Online Lead Guitar Lessons Series for the purpose of helping folks who've always wanted to learn to play guitar to get a better understanding of why things sound the way they do - not just teach a couple of chords to a song.

My goal with this series from the beginning has been to turn on novice guitarists to the world of exploring their own playing style rather than just copying tabs out of a guitar song book. The only buzzing or muting of notes should be intentional palm muting or buzzing distortion from your effects loop. There should never be any squeaking notes or fret buzzing from poor technique - and yet I'm sure you hear it all the time in your play. Why do you suppose that is?

If you're like me you spent many hours, weeks, and years learning to play guitar and improve your playing style, however perhaps you've reached a plateau or despite many hours of practice you simply can't play faster without compromising note quality. I'm sure you've worked on a million dexterity exercises for your left hand on the neck of the guitar and now you just go through the motions without improvement.

Have you ever considered that perhaps your left hand isn't the problem? Shredding style guitar speed picking involves exacting technique and coordination from both hands, and if your right hand technique is inefficient you're missing out on reaching your maximum potential.

Be sure to subscribe to this blog to get all the free guitar lessons online.

Speed Guitar Picking - Technique for the Right Hand Matters

Guitar speed picking techniques as demonstrated by your guitar heroes most times aren't the kind of techniques you want to imitate in your own playing style.

It's one thing to play with the flittering wrist technique the way Eddie Van Halen plays... but he's been playing since he was about 12 years old for about 10 hours solid a day. Are you ready to make that kind of commitment to making your own playing style? No? Good... because honestly that's the long hard way to learn to play and master the guitar.

The smart way to learn guitar is to learn proper left and right handed technique from the beginning. Buying a set of DVD lessons from a comprehensive set of lessons that range from introductory right through Metal Godz levels ensures a consistent teaching style and playing method. I highly recommend the Metal Method Complete Basic Course for that purpose. When you've gone ahead and become truly competent as a guitarist and you want more (see the Speed Kills lesson series of Metal Method). Speed guitar picking technique involves both proper left AND right handed technique. Most guitarists ignore the right hand and focus on the left hand. Get the right hand properly involved and future mastery of the instrument won't involve re-learning how to use your right hand properly.

Mastering Chords - Chords for the Beginner Guitarist

Mastering chords really is the best place for most beginner guitarists to start when learning to play and master the guitar. Chords are a little more difficult for novice fingers to play on the guitar initially but that is more than offset by the extra motivation that comes from the enjoyment of actually stringing a few chords together into short progressions. Once you've played a few progressions together the novice guitarist's own curiousity kicks in and the exploration begins. That is where the learning really takes off. Mastering chords like the basic three (major, minor, 7th) can provide for many years of enjoyment and exploration into new songs, combinations, and discovery of how old songs were put together.

My recommendation for any beginner guitarists out there is to start learning the basic chords first.

Mastering Riffs - The Foundation of Rock and Metal

Mastering riffs is the foundation of any rock or metal guitar player's playing skills. The more and varied riffs and chord progressions you know as a guitarist, the more songs you can play and the more interesting creations you'll be able to create on your own.

When someone communicates with a guitarist who has mastered a great number of chord riffs or chord progressions they only need to say, "Play a I-IV-V in the key of G" and off they'll go. The guitarist won't have to think about what the chords are (G major, C major, and D major), he or she will simply pick up the guitar and start playing the right chords in tune and time with the rest of the band.

When you've mastered a great variety of chord progressions like these, playing really becomes just that simple. It really doesn't matter what the notes and chords are - if you're in a major scale the relative positions on the fretboard are going to be the same no matter what key you're in... the only thing that changes is the starting position (the "I" in a "I-IV-V"). Likewise if you're playing in a minor scale - it doesn't matter whether you're in A minor or G minor... the fingering positions for the chords are the same... what changes is that all the chords in the A minor scale start two frets higher on the fretboard than the G minor chords. So if someone tells you to play "I-IV-VI-IV-III-IV-VII-I in G major" and decides they don't like it in that key and say, "Play it in A minor instead" you simply move all the chords you just played up two frets and play it again.

Most guitar lessons aren't going to teach you the theory of how scales and chords are put together and what their relationships to each other are, but for those wanting to learn and master the guitar the Doug Marks Metal Method lessons really are the comprehensive lessons that tie all the elements together. Not only will you learn to play great guitar but you also learn why things work and how to be adaptive and creative in your own exploration of the instrument. Mastering riffs is the beginning of that great journey.

Learn to Play Metal Guitar and Shred It Like You Rent It

Do you want to watch some free metal guitar lessons on video? Learning to play guitar certainly takes a great deal of repetition. Learning to play metal guitar is the same. Private instruction can be very expensive without being able to go back and review what you learned. Are you aware that how you practice playing the guitar is by far more important than how long you practice? You need to learn to be efficient in your rehearsal time so you stay with it. Free metal guitar lessons online can get you playing better soon.

So what makes you want to learn to play metal guitar? Is it because you've started a band? Hey, -cough- happens. The good news is that whatever reason you have for wanting to learn to play metal guitar you're going to find these free metal guitar lessons on DVD as being invaluable.

The free metal guitar lessons on video of 2009 are light years more user friendly than the sessions on tape I had when I started playing many years ago. If I'd had the videos then that I can use today you'd be jamming to MY riffs on guitar games. If you want to learn to play metal guitar I think you'll need the theory and you should learn how to have fun rehearsing so that you'll stay with it.

The first thing you need to keep filled is your heart. You need to have fun playing to learn to play metal guitar. If you find playing guitar isn't fun your guitar is going to sit in the case longing for your fingers to stroke it.
